For instance, all rivers flow in the North-South direction except the Nile, which flows in the reverse direction and there is nothing that anybody can do about this!

On the other hand, there are differences and oftentimes conflicts in life – North-South, East-West, rich-poor, developed-underdeveloped. We live with them! Nevertheless, it is accepted that the difficult and the easy complement each other - the long and the short off-set each other- while the high and the low incline toward each other.

But oppositions abound! The Arab-Israeli conflict embarked on by averred scions of Abraham, had and still is a major issue, regrettably, but justifiably eliciting entrenched and strong divides among people in all climes the world over- leading to unsavory arguments and reactions on both sides of the divide. In most cases, the side on which people sit is dictated by where they stand - primarily religious or ideological.

Emotions replace the hard facts of this conflict and the interesting but sad fact is that most protagonists on either side are not properly educated about the origins of the conflict and could not be bothered about finding out.Izrelestine, a condensation of “Israel” and “Palestine”, taken in alphabetic order of the names- is the result of a trivial issue, which led to the challenge – “…If you insist on your warped belief that Israel’s original homeland is in Palestine, prove it, but for goodness sake, make no reference to the Bible.” Acceptance of this challenge gave rise to this novel.Izrelestine examines the territory now called Palestine before and after it was so named by the Romans, and trails the movement of the Jews, first out of Palestine, through diverse and numerous climes and finally back to Palestine.

The open-sesame is the conquest of Jerusalem by Alexander the Great and the tumultuous welcome accorded him by the Jews. The account traverses the rule of the Hasmonean dynasty, the Roman Empire and the rule of Herod the Great, the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD- as well as the Bar Kochba insurrection of 117 AD, that led to the proscription of Judaism by Emperor Hadrian accompanied by the dispersion of Jews throughout the territory controlled by the then Roman Empire, officially terminating the occupation of Palestine by the Jews.Subsequently, the condition of the Jews under the Byzantine and the Ottoman Empires, and in several European countries as well as their ordeal during the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Pogroms and the Dreyfus Scandal, coupled with the Holocaust led to the Jewish resolve to found a homeland back in Palestine.

The birth of Zionism, aided by the Balfour treaty approved by the League of Nations, emboldened several Jews to return to Palestine and sequel to the defeat of the Ottoman Empire, Britain administered Palestine and the State of Israel was established after their withdrawal from there. The conflict occasioned by this Mother of All Exceptions is mindboggling and still unresolved, but whose fault is it?

Rather, who or what is to blame, especially with the consciousness that unlike fault, blame requires intent, and with this realization guilt breaks away. Yet confusion abound. After the announcement, on May 15, 1948 that Israel had been born, the Soviet Union became the second nation in the world to recognize the new state of Israel, after the United States of America. Ironically, this same country turned around to provide the primary support base for the Arabs in their quest to evict and exterminate Israel. Albeit, the final question is, “How does mankind resolve the logjam?” Can another exception, may be of equal strength be brought to play?
